spc for excel mac versionFollow the instructions below to install the software on the Mac.   The file has been downloaded from the website.  The downloaded file is named “SPC for Excel Mac.zip”.   Topics on this page include:

Unzip the Files

  • The file is probably unzipped automatically when it is downloaded to the Mac.  If not, unzip the “SPC for Excel Mac.zip” file.
    • The name of the folder when it is unzipped is “SPC for Excel Mac.”
  • Move this folder to a location where it will remain (e.g., in Applications).   If you complete the installation as shown below and then move the folder to a new location, Excel will not be able to find the program.   So, be sure you have placed the folder in a location where it will remain.
  • There are two subfolders:
    • V5 Example Data Files: this folder contains 10 Excel workbooks that can be used to learn how to use the software; these workbooks include the data that is used in the help files to explain how the software works.
    • SPC for Excel Program Files: this folder contains the program file, which is named “spcforexcelv5.xlam.”

Installing SPC for Excel as an Add-in

The next step is to make the software an Excel add-in so it will be present when you open Excel.

  • Open an Excel workbook
  • Select Tools from the Excel toolbar
  • Select Add-ins
  • Select Browse for Excel 2016 (or Select for Excel 2011)
  • Browse to the folder containing the software program file (SPC for Excel Program Files)
  • Open the folder
  • Select the software program file (spcforexcelv5.xlam)
  • Select OK

When the software opens for the first time, there are two forms that are shown:

  • The EULA (end users license agreement) – you must accept the agreement for the program file to remain open.
  • Check for Program Updates – this sets how often the software will check to see if there is an update; the default is monthly

Once the software is open, SPC for Excel will appear between Home and Insert on the Excel ribbon.  The only exception is Mac Excel 2011, which does not have a ribbon.  SPC for Excel will appear between the “Window” and “About” on the Excel menu.

SPC for Excel Tab Disappears

The SPC for Excel tab that is usually there when you open Excel is now gone.  On rare occasions, the link between the software and the Excel ribbon is lost.  If this occurs, please do the following:

  • Open an Excel workbook
  • Select Tools from the Excel toolbar
  • Select Add-ins
  • Check SPC for Excel (V5) or spcforexcelv5.xlam
  • Select OK

If SPC for Excel (V5) is not listed, then something occurred to remove it as an add-in.  You can reset the link manually by doing the following:

  • If you don’t know the location of the software, search the computer for “spcforexcelv5” (this is the software program file).  Note the location.
  • Open an Excel workbook
  • Select Tools from the Excel toolbar
  • Select Add-ins
  • Select Browse for Excel 2016 (or Select for Excel 2011)
  • Browse to the folder containing the software program file
  • Open the folder
  • Select the software program file (spcforexcelv5.xlam)
  • Select OK

This will re-establish the link to the Excel ribbon.

Preventing SPC for Excel from Opening Each Time Excel Opens

Unchecking the software as an add-in will keep it from opening:

  • Open an Excel workbook
  • Select Tools from the Excel toolbar
  • Select Add-ins
  • Check SPC for Excel (V5) or spcforexcelv5.xlam
  • Select OK

To open SPC for Excel, repeat the process but check the “SPC for Excel (V5)” option.

Uninstalling SPC for Excel

To uninstall SPC for Excel permanently from the Mac computer, follow these steps:

  • Open Excel
  • You will get a message that the file "spcforexcelv5.xlam" cannot be found.  Select OK
  • Select Tools on the Excel menu
  • Select Add-ins
  • Uncheck "spcforexcelv5.xlam" if it is still there
    • You will get a message asking if you want to remove it from the list.  Select Yes
